E’ morto Claude Lévi-Strauss

Claude Lévi-Strauss, padre dell’antropologia moderna, è morto la notte fra sabato e domenica a Parigi. Era nato in Belgio il 28 novembre del 1908, fra pochi giorni avrebbe compiuto 101 anni.

Tristes Tropiques, (“Tristi tropici“, Il saggiatore) pubblicato nel 1955, resta la sua opera più importante.

Tra le sue opere principali: Les Structures Elementaires De La Parente (1949), Tristes Tropiques (1955), Anthropologie structurale (1958), Le totémisme aujourd’hui (1962), La Pensee Sauvage (1962),  Anthropologie structurale deux (1973), De près et de loin (1983)

Prix Médicis 2009

Lo scrittore canadese di origini haitiane Dany Laferrière ha ricevuto il 4 novembre il Prix Médicis con il suo romanzo L’énigme du retour (Grasset).

Il Prix Médicis du roman étranger è stato attribuito a Dave Eggers per Le grand quoi (Gallimard) et il Médicis Essais ad Alain Ferry per Mémoire d’un fou d’Emma (Seuil).

Edward Hopper: An Intimate Biography

Alla vigilia della mostra dedicata a Edward Hopper a Milano dal 14 ottobre, sta per uscire in Italia per l’editore Johan & Levi la biografia dell’artista statunitense (“Edward Hopper” trad. di Irene Inserra e Marcella Mancini, in libreria dal 15 ottobre) scritta da Gail Levin, curatrice dell’opera di Hopper presso il Whitney Museum di New York, insegnante al Baruch College e autrice di altri libri sull’argomento.

La mostra, che verrà inaugurata il 14 ottobre prossimo è la più grande mostra italiana dedicata all’artista statunitense e presenterà 160 opere provenienti da alcune delle principali collezioni internazionali.

Afghanistan: la lezione del Vietnam

Mentra a Washington si riflette sull’Afghanistan e sulla scelta tra il ritiro o l’invio di rinforzi due libri – “Lessons in Disaster” di Gordon Goldstein e “A Better War” di Lewis Sorley-  sono diventati la lettura d’obbligo per l’amministrazione, perchè la missione in Afghanistan non replichi il fiasco del Vietnam.

Pubblicato il libro rosso di Carl Gustav Jung

Esce dopo quasi un secolo “The Red Book“, l’opera inedita di cui si conosceva l’esistenza ma non il contenuto, di Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961), padre della psicologia analitica.

Il volume, al quale l’autore lavorò per sedici anni, è una riproduzione facsimilare dell’originale e raccoglie appunti e disegni di Jung.

Il Libro Rosso pubblicato dell’editore W.W. Norton negli Usa in Italia sarà pubblicato da Bollati Boringhieri.

Asterix compie 50 anni

Il 22 ottobre scorso per festeggiare il 50 esimo compleanno di Asterix è uscito l’album numero 34, “L’anniversaire d’Asterix et Obelix, le livre d’or”

L’album del cinquantenario è uscito in contemporanea in 15 Paesi con una tiratura complessiva di 3,5 milioni di copie.

E’ uscito negli Stati Uniti il film tratto dal libro per bambini di Maurice Sendak “Where the wild things are” pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1963 (edizione italiana “Nel paese dei mostri selvaggi“, Babalibri, 1999)

Wellcome Trust Book Prize – I edizione

Wellcome Trust, la società filantropica fondata nel 1936, che promuove la ricerca biomedica, storico-medica e la comunicazione scientifica in tutto il mondo, assegnerà quest’anno il Wellcome Trust Book Prize: il riconoscimento, alla sua prima edizione, premierà  la miglior opera letterararia che abbia come tema la medicina.

Scopo del premio è la divulgazione e promozione della ricerca scientifica e delle scienza mediche presso il grande pubblico.

Il vincitore sarà annunciato il 4 novembre 2009.
